How to Register

You must register first before you are able to login to the system which then enables you to add details of bands or band members onto the system. Use the 'register here' link on the right of the top menu bar to access the registration page. You will be asked to provide your e-mail address, your first name and your last name. You will also be asked to choose your own password for future use. This password will be asked for in the future along with your e-mail address to enable you to login to the system. Upon submitting your registration details you are then sent to the login screen.

How to log in

In order to be able to add bands or band members or if you wish to edit your entered details you must first login. This can be done either from the 'log in' link on the home page beneath the search box or by using the 'register here' link on the right of the top menu bar and this will prompt you to log in if you have already registered.

Your login name will be your e-mail address and your password will be the one you defined when registering. The first time you login after registering you will be asked to enter the identification code which was sent to you by e-mail upon registering, after your first successful login you will not be asked for this identification code again.

How to add a band

After login click 'add band' either from the login page or using the link on the top menu bar. You will then be prompted to search to see if the band you wish to enter has already been entered by someone else. If the band does not exist then you will be prompted to add a band. Clicking this link will take you to a form where you are able to add your bands details. After submitting your details you are then prompted to either 'add yourself to that band as a band member' or 'add another band'. If you search and the band you were in does already exist, then to the right hand side of that band will be a link enabling you to add yourself to that band.

All the boxes in the form are pretty obvious but please note if you are putting in a link to your own website we have already put in the www.http:// prefix for you. We suggest you check the link on the website after you have finished entering your details. If the link is incorrect you can edit your details by going to 'see my bands'

How to add a band member

You can add a band member from the link on the top menu bar or from the link on the screen after login or from the link after adding a new band. If you use the link on the top menu bar or the link on the screen after login you will first be asked to search for the band in which you wish to enter yourself as a band member. If the band exists there will be a link 'add band member' to the right hand side of the band. Using that link will take you to the form for adding your band member details.

NOTE :- you are only allowed to enter yourself as a band member. The idea is for the other band members to add their own details so that both the family tree and the inter band member e-mail facilities will work. If you know that other band members do not have the facilities to enable them to enter their own details or if a band member has passed away then send us their details and we will enter them for you. Note that when we enter those details there will not be an e-mail link for that person.

How to edit your entered details

If you wish to change your entered details you must first login. You can then use the 'see my bands' link on the top menu bar. This will enable you to alter any details that you have entered.

NOTE only the member who initially entered the band details has the facility of editing those details. If you are entered as a band member but you did not initially enter the band details you are not able to edit those band details.

How to search for a band

To search for a band use the 'find band' link on the top menu bar. This link will take you to a page which gives you a search form and the letter links 'a' - 'z' and a separate link '1-9'. Clicking on any of the letters will list the first 10 bands beginning with that letter i.e. the letter 'c' will list bands beginning with 'c' in alphabetical order. At the bottom of the list will be a next button which will take you to a list of the next 10 bands beginning with that letter. Using the '1-9' link will list bands beginning with numbers instead of letters fro example. 10CC.

If you wish to be more specific in your search you can use the boxes to specify different criteria, e.g. if you leave the band name empty, select band type 'jazz', specify Town / City as Liverpool and Country United Kingdom - clicking 'search' will list all the jazz bands currently entered that are in Liverpool, England.

You can also use wild cards for your band name search e.g. entering 'd*.*' in the band name will search for all bands beginning with the letter 'd', entering 'def*.*' will list all the bands beginning with 'def'.

After you have specified your search and you then have a list of bands, clicking on a band name will then display the details of that band as entered by the band member. At the bottom of the band details is a link 'view members' , clicking on this link will list the members of that band who are currently entered. Clicking on a band members name will then display that band members details and all the bands they have played in. Clicking on any of those band names will then display the details on that band etc. etc.

How to search for a band member

To search for a band member use the link on the top menu bar 'find band member'. This link will take you to a page which gives you a search form and the letter links 'a' thro' 'z' and a separate link '1-9'. This works in exactly the same way as searching for a band. When a band member is listed a separate listing is shown for each band that band member has played in. Clicking on any of those links will take you to the band member's details with that band. When listing band members if there is an 'e-mail' link to the left of the band member you can send a standard message to that band member to say that you would like to contact them. The receiver will get your name and your e-mail address so it is their choice as to whether they then wish to contact you. You must be registered and logged in to use this facility.

We hope these topics will help use to use the website but if you have any further queries please contact us on support@bandfamilytree.com
