My moneys still on Clappo - I just wish he'd prove it once in a while nowadays. Can't rule out the jazz guys though and remember who won in 'Crossroads' !

What do you mean "remember who won in Crossroads" that was a work of fiction wasn't it?!! and how about Scott Gorham when he had a "proper" sound.

Never mind all these posing rock guitarists, what about people like Jango Reinhart - even without all his fingers he left all those mentioned for dead.

NOT FAIR! that's like asking to compare pavarotti to sid vicious, they're both singers! SRV, is I think the best portrayer of a style, he took hendricks and extended it, ZAPPA was an amazing innovator, Clapton is an fantastic stylist, but is it fair to call any one of them the best?

Posted By Andy 10/11/2002   14:36 08 Reply
Tommy..I own all Led Zeppelin Albums, "nuff said"

Posted By Dave 10/11/2002   19:04 11 Reply
Tom, talking about Django Reinhart, if you ever get a chance to catch anything by a guitarist called Gary Potter I can heartily recommend it. Plays in a very similar style and for sheer technical brilliance I have *never* seen anybody as good. As was lucky enough to see him stand up at a jamming session on a Weds night at a small Jazz Club in Birkenhead. He was absolutely phenomenal!

Posted By rockin 11/11/2002   16:56 02 Reply
Well said Tom.There's no way you can say who's the best, due to different styles, and anyway, why cut your nose off to spite your face. For the record, Steve Vai,Chet Atkins,Birelli Legrine, Alan Holdsworth,Pat Metheny,Ernest Ranglin,Martin Taylor,Jeff Beck,Cliff Gallup,Scotty Moore or Van Halen could be the best on any given day round my way........

Posted By David 17/11/2002   20:15 33 Reply
I think the term 'best' is in itself impossible to define. So the better question might be, "who do you rate highly as providing the most influence and inspiration over your playing"? For me, the players that have done this over the years have been... 1. Santana 2. Pat Metheny 3. Robben Ford 4. Larry Carlton I would also mention Marcus Miller, cos' even though he's a bass player, his style and timing/syncopation have really influenced me. David

Best guitarist ever has to be Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Posted By Beverley 12/12/2002   02:28 22 Reply
Hard one....Green, Moore, May, Garcia, Gallagher, Hendrix, Carlos ...take your pick. Any person who is into music and understands it I dont think can answer your question...and to the fans it is their personal taste!!!!

Gallagher? Do you mean Rory or Noel? ;)

Posted By Mike 12/12/2002   14:14 48 Reply
It has to be 'Mike Bee' from The Bridge... Closely followed by Jimi Hendrix then Jimmy Page.

Posted By Jez 12/12/2002   15:23 03 Reply
Has no-one here heard of Eric Roche - the man does stuff on a guitar that I think is not possible!!

Posted By Beverley 13/12/2002   11:38 05 Reply
RORY...the other one never entered my mind..did anyone see him at Isle of Wight? Albert King is on my list too, there's a great album of him playing with SRV...highlight of SRV's life I should think.

Has anyone heard of Jan Akkerman on his semi acoustic hollow bodied Gibson...he must have some of the fastest fingers on a fret..If you get the chance go listen and watch him, even if you are not a jazz-fusion fan you have to admire his talent.

Hendrix was amazing, but I don't think he had as much influence as people think, after all he got a lot of ideas from a lot of guys who went before him,Buddy Guy being one.

They all may be great, But what about people like Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai, or Eric Johnson. And of course Yngwie Malmsteen? They're all Guitar gods and I havn't seen them mentioned once.

To the best of my limited knowledge there is no magic testing kit that can determine who "is" the best guitarist. Any such notions are subjective or quantative. Maybee the question "who is your favourite guitarist?", would be a little more apt. (As others has wisely stated, but alas, been ignored!) Anyway, who cares about guitarist except guitarists? I prefer the banjo and ukulele. Far more exciting. Any one for a bit of George Formby?

of course the 3 most tecnic guitarist in the world are joe satriani steve vai and malmsteeng but i think the best guitarist in the world is the one who is able to realize solo that everyone enjoys, a one with a heavy and even romantic tone a tone who nobody is able to give to his own guitar : BRIAN MAY (listen to "brighton rock" and live at wembley) it s impossible to realize how he plays..................

Posted By Richard 07/03/2003   08:17 17 Reply
Could be several depending on the criteria used, ie ' hummable slols' or speed, or how many they influenced. For me, in no particular order, Vai, Satriani, MAlmsteen, Van Halen, Rhoads, Wylde, Petrucci, Gilmour, Hendrix, Beck, Blackmore, Uli jon Roth, Gilbert, Scott Henderson, Robben Ford.

Posted By Alan 19/03/2003   02:51 18 Reply
Les Paul? Scotty Moore? Definitely Bert Weedon. OK, Bert may not be the best, but there are a lot of people out there playing guitar who started out with his Play in a Day book. Those guitarists then influenced many others. And they influenced even more etc. etc. That man has a lot to answer for:-)

John Petrucci (in a band called Dream Theatre, is u have kazaa or morphious find an 8 min solo and it will blow ur mind to bits.) 2. Paul Gilbert (not many people know him, he is extremly under rated and shud be looked at more closely...he is a member of Mr.Big, check out a video from him in tokyo blowing away all those azns...its a sick solo) and if u want a 3. i guess it wud be the guitarist from a band called: Extreme, i dont know his name but he is fast... check out these songs/solos Flight of the wounded bumble bee. and He Man Woman Hater. corny names but sick skill... i like randy rhodes and steve vai and zakk wyle as well but they are all over rated so give my list a try and it will change ur mind i promice...thanx :D

The best guitarist in the world, I am completely convinced is none other than Nels Cline. If any of you have never heard of him, go out & buy "Interstellar Space Revisited" and prepare yourself for an absolutely insane ride. Jazz times magazine called him, "The worlds most dangerous guitarist." He turns the guitar into an entirely different instrument getting sounds from it you would not think possible.

ok time to set the records straight, their is only 2 guitarists that live up to that name and they are Jason Becker & Marty Friedman but i dont suppose any of u little biatches would know who they are, i dont understand how u could say kurt cobain i mean the guy was a loser and a sloppy guitarist long live the thrash and keep the sabbath dream alive

(haven't seen his name mentioned at all, and if u want proof that he's an excellent guitarist, listen to the end solo to a song by dream theter called "fatal tragedy")

SEGOVIA,DJANGO AND ATKINS ARE DEAD, SO WOULD HAVE TO BE WAS, NOT IS, ON THOSE.PROBLEM WITH THE QUESTION IS STYLES: best: atkins/travis style: was chet jazz:was django, flatpicking: is doc watson, classical: was segovia, rock:vai, satriani. now look who has been left out: the romeros, bela fleck, page, clapton, hendrix, rev. gary davis, ry cooder, c.parkening. and guys you may not have thought of: have you ever heard david bromberg when he gets serious about playing not screwing around? The real best is probably some studio musician who has never had his name in a magazine, but who can sight read anything ever written, and can pick up by ear anything ever played, but doesn't have the right agent, looks, personna, or desire to be a headliner.

I went through and looked at a lot of the guys everyone has listed as"THE BEST"and all the replyies stem from taste...THE BEST would seem to me to be takin in a technical sense and i dont see hendrix or clapton hitting that level.the blues is a whole other spectrum of the field,SRV was an incredible player and very hard to touch in the feeling he plays with.as for the shred, its all petrucci, speed and feeling oreintated,he is the man right now.the whole technical thing i believe was started by EVH and stolen from him by RHOADS,who took the playing to a higher level.Vai and Satch both picked it up and ran with it carrying it to the mass public.I am a firm believer that jason becker would have been the best and probably was for a short while if that tragic ailment had not taken his playing from us.but as of now John Petrucci carries the number one slot. and if your not familier with his playing you must check it out,not only does Dream Theater have the best guitarist but also one of the top drummers around today

technical + Rythym + great riffery + amazing solos + showmanship + excellent Tone and structure.... Ritchie Blackmore from deep purple is the worlds best guitarist. Hendrix was the innovator of the style for without hendrix modern rock would be plain and simple as it was in the 40's 50's... No. fact is-someone had to do it, Just so ahappened it was hendrix. My point is Blackmores style incorporates the classical orchestrial methods of playing into riffs such as Space truckin and Smoke on the water I can picture an orchestra stringing those tunes.and btw-I love shred guitar

"Best" is really a relative term. Some that have passed on would include Tommy Bolin and Mick Ronson. And let us never, ever forget the mighty Mike Bloomfield. My favorite Clapton era is the Bluesbreaker to Cream days. The man was very hungry and passionate at that time...trying to make his mark.

half of the guitarists you guys speak of i've never heard before so i might be wrong but i'm pretty confident hendrix is the best ever. You have to see him on video to understand how good he was. He'd add all these improvised solos and stuff that would be more complex than the actual song. half the time it would look like it was too easy for him. if you were to focus in only on his face while he was playing you couldn't tell that he was doing something extremely complicated cause he'd be really relaxed looking and he wouldn't be looking at his guitar. he could solo with his teeth, sometimes he'd run his strings over something like the mic stand and play his guitar like a violin. On a DVD i have of him playing live at berkley when i pause it in most spots his hands show up as blurs. I'd really like to see these guys that are supposedly better than hendrix play.

It's got to be Yngwie Malmsteen for me, I've seen him on the recent DVD G3 live in Denver and he makes mincemeat off Steve Vai and Satriani put together outside stage presence and dynamics, Nuno, still fantastic live and is a great songwriter also makes him the best - who said tread was dead hey?

Just two more first Pat Metheny, as far as the style one goes, got to be Bireli Lagrene, check out album Front Page, cooks with gas, O' yes it's 'Shread' not tread OOPP'S

Not sure what constitutes "best" but in my opinion Richard Thompson. Also one of the greatest writers.

Posted By mark 07/08/2004   23:32 59 Reply
there are lots of guitarists in the world, to say who is the best is not entirely fair on these guys. there are lots of famous guitarists who are a class act (joe satriani, steve vai, malmsteen, petrucci, hendrix, slash, clapton) you could spend hours naming amazing guitarists. but to be fair you cannot put anyone before the other, hendrix was a true inspiration for many and made guitar playing look as easy as an every day thing. But there is not a chance that anyone could really point at a guitarist and call him the best. just comes down to preference. for speed malmsteen and petrucci are good...technicallity satriani is a class act as for song writting he is too.... hendrix is a legend, clapton was one of a kind

No-one. Best is a completely meaningless term to describe a guitarist. Playing guitar isn't a sport anyway, if it was it would be in the Olympics!

Scrolling through these messages, people have mentioned some top guitarists like John Petrucci,Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert and Jimi Hendrix. But i'm really shocked that no 1 has mentioned Dimebag Darrell (A.K.A-Darrell Abbott)of Damageplan and famous for Pantera. He had the utmost technuique, speed and the composing skills. Unfortunatly, his recent death was a major shock to the heavy metal industry. His name will live on. Plus, no 1 has mentioned Michael Angelo of NITRO, pure speed and accuracy, he even plays 2 guitars at the same time...once, he played 4 different guitars stuck together like an X shape in a solo, live.

ah - Montrose, first proper rock album I bought. Still love it 30 years later! Ronnie was probably the best riff-merchant from the US around that time. He was obviously influenced by Jimmy Page. That first album was a huge influence on loads of people.

The best guitarist in the world is the child that picks up a guitar for the first time and strikes a note. I think you can ask all of your idols whether or not this is true. There is not greater moment nor greater performance than at that instant when the universe and reality are changed forever. By the newest "Greatest Guitarist Of All Time." Terry James

I agree with some of the replies. The term "best in the world" is pretty meaningless. There have been some great (and in my opinion some far from great) guitarists mentioned. I have a lot of favourites, some of whom are Gary Moore, Jeff Healy, Toni Iomi, Peter Frampton, Billy Gibbons and Robert Cray - just to mention a few. Some of the "unknown" ones that I have on record are also awsome. (I agree that George Benson is very good - and the brother from the Isley Brothers who does lead)

Clapton is deffinatly no doubt about it

Posted By Tom 09/06/2005   04:28 40 Reply
Clapton is on my top ten. I like Beck, Page and other blues rock gods. Page ripped it apart , in 1969, with Heartbeaker. Sloppy, staggering, fuel injected and bend the string behind the nut. Jimmy's creative array of 27 different bends and penatonic runs of fury blew me away the first time I heard him. He does not do anything now worth talking about. I am up to date with the current scene. I think, the boys from King Diamond are fantastic. There are many different styles of music. I will aways enjoy a strat going into tube distorted amp setup. Who is the best. Who knows, but Clapton and other greats will pick me up during the day or night. I wish everyone the best and rock on.

Posted By Tom 09/06/2005   04:35 19 Reply
I was not into him at first. The "No more tears" album and seeing the concert tour earned my repect. He is really freaking good and can rock with the best of them.

Posted By Tom 09/06/2005   04:39 48 Reply
I thought of that myself about Jeff Beck. Of course, anyone is welcome to study his music and bring flat picking into the mix.

Posted By Tom 09/06/2005   04:50 09 Reply
Yeah, I wondered about that. I read an articel about his super plexi losses that special sound. He had the tech do everything to it. Eddie still was disappointed. I think after that, he started experiment with different amplifier heads. Mabye he will find another Marshall someday that is to his liking, but he did have the tone with that old Marshall.

Well IMHO there are many many great guitarists out there, but i think the most important quality for any "legend" has to be diversity, being able to do "everything" Okay so heres my list 1)Joe Satriani 2)John Petrucci 3)Steve Vai 4)Yngwie Malmsteen 5)Vinnie Moore

I have been following Pat Metheny since 1977 and just saw him last night in Morristown NJ so I may be biased, but I think he is THE BEST. He combines all genres and is a master of them all. He dares to experiment and put out shit like zero tolernce for silence, but this is how he forces himself to grow as an artist. He does not get stuck in one singular style for his entire career. I love the list of players mentioned and agree you really can't say who is Best but if forced to it would be METHENY. At least today. Can't forget about greats like Eric Johnson, get his instructional video for a good insight to his influences and how he gets his sound and technique. Other favs are Hendrix, Chet Atkins, Django, Clapton, Roy Buchanan, Blackmore, Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Lang, Duane Allman, Jeff Beck aka the axe murderer, EVH, Rhoads, David Gilmour, Robin Trower, Santana. The G3 folks are impressive but mainly from a technical flash perspective not much soul in their guitar work that I have listened to which is only the latest G3 dvd.
